How to practise the voice safely

A safe order for individual practice: check the day’s voice, begin in a comfortable range and transfer the exercise into music.

A short practice sequence

10–15 minutes

Check the voice, prepare articulation and add comfortable sound. Expand range only after the onset is stable.

  1. Check speaking voice, breathing and the absence of pain.
  2. Prepare face, lips, tongue and jaw without forceful stretching.
  3. Sing a short phrase in the middle range on a comfortable vowel.
  4. Add pitch, text and musical purpose in small steps.

Check today’s voice first

The same warm-up does not fit every day. Listen to speech and note dryness, hoarseness, pain, illness and general fatigue. Stop if there is pain or a marked loss of voice.

Begin away from the limits

Take the first sounds in the comfortable middle. Keep phrases short and do not raise volume automatically with pitch.

Change one condition at a time

Keep one vowel, then add a small interval, then restore a consonant or text. Changing pitch, volume, timbre and word together hides the cause of tension.

Listen to the repeat

Sing, pause and repeat. Useful coordination returns without growing pressure. A phone recording makes onset, intonation and vowel stability easier to hear.

Finish with music

Use two or four measures from the current work. Sing them on a vowel, restore the text and check that the new action remains.
